Hollywood Country Club
Homewood, Alabama
Ballpoint rendering by Don Stewart

The Hollywood Country Club, then known as Club Rex, was built
by Clyde Nelson on Shades Valley Highway (now Lakeshore Drive) in the 1930’s.
The facility boasted a large, Spanish Mission-style clubhouse, with a large
swimming pool in the front that was a favorite place for children and teens.
Hollywood Country Club provided members and guests “an elite dining and dancing
spot” for nearly half a century.
During the Great Depression the Club fell into disrepair, later renovated to
serve as a tangible symbol of postwar optimism. The proprietors spared no
expense in making the new Hollywood Country Club the showplace of Shades Valley.
Changing ownership several times over the years, the building last hosted
audiences as Brothers Music Hall in the late 1970’s. Damage from fire resulted
in its demolition in 1984.
